Not a duplicate - never saw this message.

To all refs: You can also check the list archives here:

    http://lists.ayso45.org/pipermail/ayso45-refs-ayso45.org/

to review the archive of the referee mailing list discussions, nicely
dated and threaded.

An attacker was in an offside position and the ball rolled near them, well within playable range. The attacker did not play the ball nor block line of sight of a defender, so neither the AR nor I called offsides. A parent griped that since the player in an offside position could have played, we should have declared offsides.

*Good call, ref team!*

The irate parent was wrong (surprise! ;-) ). If you know who the
parent was, you might suggest that s/he take a bit of time to review the
simplified laws of the game that I posted to both the coaches' and
parents' mailing lists, early this season:

As you and the AR both knew and applied to this scenario: merely being
in an offside position is */not /*an offense! The player in the offside
position must */participate in play/* to be guilty of an offside
infraction (by playing the ball, blocking an opponent, etc.).
