Hello Coaches,
A reminder that Saturday September 19th is both Silent Saturday and Referee
Appreciation Day. These events have been on the schedule for the season and
a description of Silent Saturday can be found in your Coaches' Binder on
page 23.
For Referee Appreciation Day, even though it is early in the season, like
you, the referees are all volunteers and in addition to officiating the
games, they have gone through long training sessions. For U7 and U8, your
team should honor your team referee(s). For U10, your team should honor both
your team referee(s) as well as the neutral center referee who officiates
your match. For U12 and above, your team should honor the 3-person referee
crew who officiates your match. A signed card would be nice and if the team
is so inclined, a gift certificate (Starbucks, Pete's Coffee, Sport's
Authority, etc) or a new sports car is also a nice gesture.
Silent Saturday applies to all divisions from Under-7 through Under-14.
The nature of the Under-6 program is not conducive to the concept and
because Under-16 and Under-19 play inter-regional play, we have no control
over the opposing teams and don't want to place you at a perceived
competitive disadvantage.
The main purpose of Silent Saturday is to just let the kids play and for
coaches to see that players can still play the game without the instruction
from the coaches, parents and spectators.
Guidelines -
We will message out to the parents in a separate Email on their role in
Silent Saturday.
Referees are not asked to enforce Silent Saturday - this is up to the
coaches. The referees will be instructed that they may have to provide a
little more on-field assistant to players than usual for the younger
divisions.
Coaches are asked to only give instruction before the game and at halftime.
Coaches can quietly instruct players on the sideline.
Coaches can read out the lineup at substitution breaks.
For younger divisions (U10 and below), coaches can help position the players
at the start of a quarter.
For younger divisions (U8 and below), ONE coach per team may provide MINIMAL
instruction/correction to field players correcting only the most obvious
errors ("You are heading for the wrong goal...").
Coaches may provide support for their team by clapping ONLY.
Players on the sidelines are encouraged to cheer wildly in support of the
players on the field.
Players on the sidelines may not direct any instructive comments to players
on the field.
Players on the field are encouraged to provide direction, support and
instruction to one another.
Please do your part in making Silent Saturday a success - it is for the
kids!
Thanks,
J. Drew Van Horne
